How do movies, music, books, news, ads, social media, video games, popular culture, and the internet inform and shape us? What does it mean to be literate in today’s world? What is media literacy? In this course, we will go beyond books and paper (although we still study them too ;) to look critically at a variety of media and how it all reflects and shapes our culture. For example, how are teens portrayed in the media? How about rural Montana? Does it even exist? No one is impervious to the flood of information and social cues we receive from technology and various 21st-century mediums. This class will break it down and encourage you to think critically about and be an active consumer of media and information in our world.
