Lewistown voters approved an increase in local taxes of $68,606.20 (approximately 5.54 mills) to support the elementary general fund by a vote of 966 (for) to 702 (against). These are the unofficial results from the Lewistown School District school election held on Tuesday, May 2. The Lewistown Board of Trustees will officially canvas the results of the election at the May 8 school board meeting. The meeting will be held at the Lincoln Board room at 6 p.m.

“On behalf of the Lewistown Public Schools, I would like to thank the community for supporting are recent Elementary General Fund levy election,” said Lewistown Superintendent Jason Butcher. “This levy will be used to fund academic programs for the students in our school district. Your support is greatly appreciated.”

In addition to the approval of the mill levy, Lewistown voters also elected incumbent Kris Birdwell, Jeff Southworth and Stephen M. Vantassel to the Board of Trustees. They will each serve a three-year term.

Birdwell earned the most votes in the election with 1,466. Southworth was a close second with a vote count of 1215. A close vote between Vantassel and Lavonne Jurack saw Vantassel elected by 26 votes (790 to 764). Again, these are the unofficial returns.  They will become official once the school board canvasses them.

Birdwell, Southworth and Vantassel will be sworn in as trustees prior to the beginning of the board reorganizational meeting, which takes place on Monday, May 8.
