Thought from the Past

Lewistown's SRO

Sergeant Rob Hartford

Sergeant Rob Hartford is a member of the Lewistown City Police and is a graduate of Fergus High School.  Sergeant Hartford has been working as the School Resource Officer for the Lewistown Schools since the fall of the 2008 school year.  He can be contacted at either the police department or at Fergus High School during a school day.  His contact number at the Lewistown Police Department is 535-1800.

In relation to the success of the SRO program in Lewistown, the staff at Fergus High School feel the addition of an officer in the schools has been very successful and that the program speaks for itself.  The following information comes from a recent letter for financial support for the continuance of the program.

bullet

FHS student respect for authority and law enforcement is at an all-time high.  Recent surveys have indicated that students and parents believe their schools are safer.

bullet

The officer works as a liaison with the law enforcement community and other public agencies to help provide seamless support for our student population.

bullet

The program has helped create a high level of consistency in expectation and follow-through between the school and the community allowing obvious problems in one area to be supported effectively across the spectrum of the community.

bullet

Student exposure to law enforcement programs and beliefs has been extremely positive and many times students themselves would rather visit with an officer first about problems they are having at home, or at school..

bullet

Having an officer in the school when we deal with acts of violence, or deal with use or possession issues relating to drugs, alcohol, or weapons, has made a huge impact in how effective we have been in solving many individual problems.

bullet

Statistically, we have seen far fewer fights and somewhat fewer problems with drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

bullet

Last but not least, no school is immune from acts of extreme violence and having an officer in the building is a proven deterrent to crime.  When it comes to this issue both Fergus High School and the community of Lewistown know better than anyone that immunity to violent crime is non-existent.  We strongly believe having an officer in the building helps prevent many violent acts and is an excellent resource should problems occur.

A quote from Principal Scott Dubbs on the effectiveness of this valuable program:

“Over the years we have made many changes to help our students feel safe in our schools, but I believe one of the single most effective steps in that process involved our School Resource Officer program.  In surveying our students the last couple of years, one of the highest rated student comments related to student perception of safe schools.  I am of the opinion that our SRO makes a huge difference in our learning environment.”
